Selena's father was the producer, had complete control over content and had approval over the choice of who played Selena. At one point the actors stopped being actors and became the people they were playing. The scene at the hospital was filmed only once, the actors were really crying and the scene was shot only once. All the actors comment on the affect that being in the movie had on them and how inspiring it was personally to film the movie.
