Its about time somwone takes Hydrogen Seriously, Insted of Oil Hungry America, You Know if you run straight hydrogen in a car you won't need oil in it? Just give it a teflon treatment! Were just scraping the surface with Hydrogen Technology, before you know it were powering everything with it, and as time goes by we will have a very effencent way of making it, PWN Go Hydrogen!

Already 70% of Icelands economy is driven by reneweble and clean energy. Waterfall and geothermal etc. That covers all the industry energy and heating of houses. It is only the cars, fishing fleet and aeroplanes that covers these other 30%. So problem is that we are very dependent on foreign car manufactures to come up with solutions to devolop hydrogen cars that are competitive with fuel cars. I have alwasy said that Icelanders should just start manufacturing hydrogen cars themselves.

But hydrogen is extremely expensive, and manufacturing their own hydrogen cars would require it to be done in a privatised enviroment, since the goverment wouldnt want to risk losing most of its GDP on transportation in case other options themselves. But this means there would have to be the possiblity of profit, and with hydrogen cells going for around a million dollars, its quite unlikely.

Hydrogen is not as expensive as people think it is and each year it gets more cheap. You don't have to ship it from abroad, don't have to ship it to the fueling station, it saves polution quotas, helps better the foreign trade balance, health costs are assumed to be reduced quite much, creates domestic jobs that pay taxes and increases consuming and therefor more jobs and of course it protetcs the environment.

I don't remember the numbers accurately. But the cost of manufacturing hydrogen cells 12 years ago was something like 500% more expensive than it is today. Believe me hydrogen cell does not cost one million dollars today, far from it. Daimler Chrysler or Daimler Mercedes or whatever the name is now is set on mass manufacturing hydrogen cars in 2010 at almost price compatable way with fuel cell cars. Governments will be likely to give tax breaks on those cars so I think it will work out ok.

There are certainly problems. Nr. 1 is storaging. Driving around with hydrogen storaged in your trunk can be dangerous because of explosion. Storage tank will also be much more heavier than bensin/oil and therefor it will take more energy to drive them and it destroys roads more quickly. And then there is an issue of storaging hydrogen because of the tempeture, but of course hydrogen(liquid or gas form) responds to temp. in other ways than bensin. But scientists are working on solutions.

Use hydro-on-demand systems. no high pressure, stored as water till used. Run on engine designed to maximize HHO potential. Totally clean, and uses current technology. It's better to burn than convert to electricity. GO Iceland!!!

Hydrogen in your trunk dangerous eh? LOL - what about that 12+ gallons of gasolene under it? I think that danger is way over-rated.
