the new version of final cut studio 2 is around 1500 us I think could be down closer to 1200 I know I would not be able to stand cutting on an imac myself, (I would opt for the mac pro). you can pick up the gl2's really cheap now since HD is finally really here, but I think think the gl2 is pretty limiting.

he is shooting 4:1:1 colorspace in mini dv, its not like he is going to pull a movie quality composite with it. its a hell of alot better than most of the compositing you see on youtube!

i would think that anyone with field gear and lav or a boompole and a shotgun mic, and the rest of the crew, would know that, but even a "dumb" slate isn't really needed for onboard a/v recording set to be digitized. film is another story, but indymogul itself seems more pertinent to consumer video users.
